Terminology: AI and the Law

Jargon is rarely explained, so we thought we would try.

On the principle that you don’t understand something until you can explain it, in simple terms, to someone with no relevant knowledge, we’re compiling a list of our own definitions for terms we see used in entertainment, ‘AI’, and the law.

Our Glossary provides a rough narrative for what ‘AI’ currently means in production, as well as more generally.

It’s a work in progress, intending to cover:

  • non-technical descriptions of useful terms

  • context on how terms are used

  • notes on issues around misuse and common misunderstandings

We want to understand things ourselves in sufficient detail that we can confidently comprehend their implications, critique them as concepts, and discuss them usefully with our team, our partners and customers, and the world at large.

So we are publishing our definitions here, currently totalling 154 entries (29 legal terms and 125 technical terms).

Feel free to use and download them. And tell us if you spot errors or omissions.

We hope you find them useful.

Please let us know in these forms any terms you would add, and how you would change any definitions.
